Vitalhotel Schulenberg · Upper Harz
Lake Oker, the dam and the waterfall —
your base in Schulenberg.
Schulenberg sits at the quiet upper end of the Oker reservoir (Okertalsperre), on the edge of the Harz National Park. The lake — around 225 hectares, held by a roughly 75-metre dam and managed by the Harzwasserwerke — is just a short distance from the Vitalhotel, and the whole Oker valley is your hiking ground.
Twelve kilometres down the valley, on the B498, the Romkerhaller Wasserfall drops about 64 metres. It is regarded as the highest man-made waterfall in the Harz: King George V of Hanover had it created in 1863 to frame his hunting lodge. There is no entrance fee and free parking; by car it is about 15 minutes from the hotel.
A note for walkers: the Bramke bridge across the lake has been fully closed since November 2023 (rebuild planned for end of 2027), so the classic loop needs a short detour — we give you the current route at check-in. And no, there is no suspension bridge at the Okertalsperre; the famous Titan RT is at the Rappbode reservoir in the eastern Harz.
